Free Living Well class helps those living with a chronic illness
BELGRADE – Belgrade Regional Health Center is bringing the Living Well Seminar back this February after a successful turnout in November. The Living Well series focuses on self-management of chronic conditions by creating an interactive environment. Participants discuss coping and relaxation techniques, and participate in brainstorming activities with trained co-leaders.
Classes are on Tuesdays, 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. starting February 21 at the health center. The seminar is six weeks long, running from February 21 to March 27. The workshop covers topics including medication usage, dealing with difficult emotions, and communication skills. Former participants say they feel better and have more energy and motivation.
Doug Sears of Anson recently completed the Living Well class at the Bingham Area Health Center and says that it helped him realize he was caught in a symptom cycle brought on by his depression.
“From the very first class, I discovered I was caught in a vicious symptom cycle,” says Doug. “I learned new ways to break the cycle and created action plans that I can stick to.”
Past participants say that creating action plans and finding common ground with fellow classmates have been the biggest contributors to their success. Doug’s action plan consists of short-term goals that include walking two miles every day, cutting caffeine out of his diet, and continuing to practice meditation to help him sleep at night.
“We were taught meditation techniques and I get much better sleep now,” he says. “It has helped with my fatigue and I am a lot more productive now.”
The six week class is free, and open to the public. Though the class is targeted towards individuals with a chronic condition, spouses and care-takers are welcome. If you are interested in learning more about the class, please contact Laura at 207-215-8438 or sign up at the health center.
